Numerical routines in maxima

Greetings, and thanks so much for your helpful reply! Now do you know
how to get something like this to work?

z(c):=NEWTON(%E^d-d-c,d,1.0,0.01);
plot2d(z(c),[c,1.2,2.3]);

I get the following error:

MACSYMA was unable to evaluate the predicate:
ABS(c - 1.718281828459045) < 0.01
#0: NEWTON(exp=%E^d-d-c,var=d,x0=1.0,eps=0.01)
#1: zz(c=c)
#2: z(c=1.5)
 -- an error. Quitting. To debug this try DEBUGMODE(TRUE);)

I've a little library built up myself. Have you interfaced into
maxima?  If so, how?

Many thanks!
