My recollection was almost correct:

Actually, latex refuses to typeset  $$ \left(a + $$
I get this:

! Missing \right. inserted.
<inserted text>
                 \right .
l.13 $$\left(a+ $
                  $

so maybe you can typeset \bigl(  which specifies some particular size
but not                   \left(  where the size is computed somehow.
