Clisp has backspace, and it is now included in the 2.5 cvs version of
gcl as well. If you want to build against the new gcl, you can get it
from their cvs with the following command:
cvs -z9 -d:pserver:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/gcl checkout -r
Version2_5_0 -d gcl-2.5.0 gcl

Jay is the expert here, but I do have one question - are you using the
emacs files that were in the RPM, or the newer ones in emaxima? (Since
it's called maxima-mode it sounds like the RPM files.) If you are
trying to use the ones from the RPM, I'd really recommend trying the
new ones.
If you want to download them, they are available here:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/maxima/maxima-pre59/emacs/
You will want to download at least the following:
emaxima.el
emaxima.lisp
emaxima.sty
maxima-font-lock.el
maxima-symbols.el
maxima.el
For maxima session management I don't think the .sty file is needed
(Jay?) but if you have latex it's worth installing - the new manual has
been developed using this system, and including formatted maxima
sessions in latex documents is a nice feature to have.
I seem to remember having problems similar to yours with the old files,
but once I tried emaxima there wasn't any point in messing with the old
emacs mode.
(BTW Jay, it looks like we need to update the postscript version of the
EMIntro in cvs.)
