Maxima GUIs/emacs troubles! (and commutativity issues)

Good day,
Ok, I built both GCL and maxima... seems to work so far. I do have
backspace... that's nice.
Not to be ungrateful or anything, but why can't I get the back arrow
now? ;-) Right now, if you make a mistake at the beginning of an
expression, you have delete it all to correct the mistake. This reminds
me of the good old days... back when 16 KB was a lot of memory... ;-) Is
it just me or is lisp really backward?
I really shouldn't complain since now, at the very least, I can
delete!!! That's a sweet feature!!!
Ok, well things got a bit better... now, I'm just hoping that some of
the bugs I found (should I report computational bugs? what is the state
of maxima??? I suspect some of these bugs are lisp related...?)
One bug I had was that an expression which was obviously zero, say
a*b-b*a would not cancel to zero... just like maxima would not assume
commutativity.
That seems lisp-related?
I also had what seems like more serious problems, but they all seemed to
come back to commutativity issues...??? Anyone else having such problems?
Disclaimer: I don't know the first thing about lisp.
Thanks!
