expand is broken bug / don't remove expand though

I agree.  Since we want 5.9 to be the release everyone works off of to
put the system through testing for a stable release, we definitely want
to fix such a major problem as this before release in order to avoid
lots of redundant bug reports related to this issue.  Remember all the
trouble that xmaxima bug caused in the 5.6 release.  What do you think
