Failed "make check" with recent CVS on Debian sid

As reported previously, I am trying to build Maxima under
Debian sid. I'm using gcl 2.5.0 (included with Debian).

make check fails, and tests/tests-gcl.log contains the following:

GCL (GNU Common Lisp) Version(2.5.0) Mon Mar 4 16:27:59 EST 2002
Licensed under GNU Library General Public License
Contains Enhancements by W. Schelter

Testing rtest1.mac
Caused an error break: rtest1.mac

Testing rtest1a.mac
Unrecoverable error: Segmentation violation..
/home/rgmerk/programming/maxima/maxima/tests/../lisp-utils/maxima-run-lisp:
line 389: 12393 Aborted (core dumped) "$1" $extra_args
$load_arg -eval '(run)'

Is gcl 2.5.0 compatible with CVS maxima? Is there something
else Imissing or obsolete? There doesn't seem to be a
"how to build maxima" document either in the distribution or
on the website. I'd be more than happy to write one once I
figure out the procedure.

Hope somebody can help me.
