I have submitted a new info file via the fink package submission
tracker, and it should be available in a couple of days. Maxima works
very well now on OS X (for me, at least); thanks!
To summarize the discussion: yes, there was a bug in the path logic for
the prerelease version I packaged last June, but it seems to have been
fixed in the current rc1. And yes, James was correct, fink wants to
install in a temporary directory with paths configured for the ultimate
permanent location, and that does now work using the
configure/make/install logic that he suggested.
