I think that an IRC channel (maybe in irc.openprojects.net) would be great
.
one reason would be a place to newbies ask dumb questions, but also a
place where developers could share ideas in real-time. For both tasks, the
real-time factor overcomes the low-noise-ratio in a couple of orders of
magnitude
