Traditional terminal keys

Hi!

I have a problem with using maxima:
In terminal the keys TAB, up, down, left, right does not work.
I have used a bit for the numeric calculating the software octave, where
this keys worked fine.

Can me anybody reponse how can I enable this feature?
To reduce the typing...
Is  similar as the using-console or terminal(xterm)
