Very wierd! But I'm relieved in the sense that it's not an across the
board slowdown, but something pathalogical on Windows 98/ME (same thing).
I'll try to look into it further, but I'm no longer worried.
Just some data points that may be relevant: 5.9 uses tcl 8.4 but 5.5
used tcl 8.3. 5.9 uses starkits 8.4 but 5.5 used freewrap.
There's very little difference between the xmaxima startup code -
just bug fixes and surface UI improvements.
