Dear Professor Fateman,

My brief reply to your recent message has as follows:

Yes, because of this Maxima "bug" we are trying to fix (recent
messages by Daniel Lemire and CY,15 March 2002, I do
not know about previous messages), users of Maxima began
to use ODE2 instead of ODE in solving odes with much less
computing power (i.e. just for the elementary ode cases).
ODE2 has one file on odes, ODE has several (through
ODEAUX), in code lines summing it is much, much more
lengthy, the names have been brought to your attention (for
most of them), but the files are not present at least in 5.5 beta,
5.6 and 5.9.0.

Additionally, Mike Clarkson mentions in his

DOE-Maxima Reference Manual

http://starship.python.net/crew/mike/maxima/html/macref/

in the ODE part of the manual

http://starship.python.net/crew/mike/maxima/html/macref/node68.html

the additional ODE-related files

\ODE\ODE.DEM

\ODE\ODE.DM1

\ODE\ODE.DM2

\ODE\ODE.DM3

\ODE\ODE.USG

in the ODE directory, which are also absent from Maxima now
because of this "bug".

I also believe they should. Perhaps in DOE-Macsyma.
I will also ask Mike Clarkson.
