Dear Felix,
I agree with Dick (with Maxima 5.9.0). My computations
with Maxima:
(C1) display2d : false$
(C2) int : integrate(1/(cos(x)+sin(x)),x), radcan;
(D2) (LOG(SIN(x)+(SQRT(2)-1)*COS(x)+SQRT(2)-1)
-LOG(SIN(x)+(-SQRT(2)-1)*COS(x)-SQRT(2)-1))
/SQRT(2)
(C3) diff(int,x)-1/(cos(x)+sin(x)), ratsimp, trigreduce;
(D3) 0
I may have misunderstood your question. Please, be so kind
to provide further details. Perhaps you mean a simplified form
of the above rather ugly result. This has to be checked and it
requires some expertise with Maxima simplification commands
(beyond ratsimp and radcan I mean).
I must confess that after simplification Mathematica 4.1 provided
to me a more elegant result. That's true. My Table of Indefinite
Integrals too. Is this what you mean? (A more elegant result or
no integral at all with Maxima 5.9.0?)
Best regards from Patras,
Nikos
