I have been lurking on the Maxima mailing list for quite a while now.
Because I don't really have time to be actively involved in the
project, I decided to get daily digests of the list, instead of
receiving each message separately. However, the volume of spam on the
list has increased so much recently that there is sometimes more spam
than "ham" in a single digest, which causes Caltech's spam-filter to
mark the message "X-Spam-Status: Yes", which causes Apple Mail to
automagically throw it away for me (I can turn that off for specific
addresses of courses, but it's questionable whether I'd want to do that
if every message about computer algebra comes with three about viagra).
I was about to switch my subscription to message-by-message, so I could
individually filter out the viagra messages, but I really like the
digest feature, and I was wondering whether the university of Texas
also has a spam-filter, and if yes, if the mailing list could block
spam centrally? In my experience, SpamAssassin (the filter used here at
the institute) is very effective.
