Not really - it's bound to having KDE installed on your machine.  You
don't have to actually be running it.  I normally use Fluxbox as my
window manager, but I still can use KDE apps.

I agree.  A KDE native interface wouldn't be a bad thing, but I think
it would have to be implimented by a different project.  I still think
a native Lisp GUI is the way to go in the long run for Maxima's default
UI, but that discussion is a ways down the road.

It does, but I'm not sure about using it on platforms other than Linux
for open source stuff.
