Things to do before GUI-developers can start their work

Have you heard of TeXmacs?  Please try it.  http://www.texmacs.org/ 
They have mailing lists also.

You savvy Debian users can just "apt-get install texmacs".

I think it would be well worthwhile to develop the interface between
TeXmacs and Maxima!  It is already pretty good -- you can perform input
to the CAS in math mode, not just ye olde flat-ASCII.  It lets you
select subexpressions with the mouse, for cut and paste.

There are some interesting papers to be read re the topic of CAS user
interfaces.  Here are two that I found very interesting:

You'll find more there, and probably a few more like it at ACM.  Some of
the ideas there should be implemented in the TeXmacs / Maxima interface.
