Unfortunately you hit the problem which bogged
Maxima 5.9.0 Windows port for quite long time.
It appeared that the problem was resolved
but as far as I can see it is back once again.
And sometimes in some strange fashion. In particular
Maxima worked fine on my Win XP and suddenly
out of the blue it stopped to work with precisely
the same symptoms - xmaxima.exe is unable to
start maxima process. Right now I'm trying to find out
what change in the system triggered the problem.
