writefile doesn't include input lines

I guess the subject says it all. My build_info() is:

Maxima version: 5.9.0
Maxima build date: 21:11 2/9/2003
host type: i386-redhat-linux-gnu
lisp-implementation-type: CLISP
lisp-implementation-version: 2.29 (released 2002-07-25) (built on
localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1])

The file that results from writefile("filename") seems to show
everything that Maxima writes, but nothing that I write, so I end up
with stuff like this

which is not what I would expect from describe(writefile). Is there some
setting I can toggle to get my input included?

Also, describe(closefile) says you should give the filename as an
argument, but closefile() doesn't take an argument--it closes whatever
file is currently open.
