Emacs + Maxima problem

Hi,

I start emacs 21.2-1 and do C-x maxima. Then I try to enter the simple
term x**2:

(C1) x**2;

               2
(D1)              x
(C2) 

Why is the 2 in the wrong place? Could it have to do something with my
tab settings in emacs?
