If you would like to test the use of Maxima in an Emacs shell, you can
download Rosetta's cdrom iso file, burn a cdrom with it, and install it on
you PC : Emacs is preinstalled, and using Maxima from it is described in
this page:

Everything is run from the cd, only 0.3Mb of config files are written on
the hard disk. The user's manual in pdf form can be downloaded from the
link at the bottom of main page of the User's guide:

Yes, I agree Maxima notebooks are very nice. The Rosetta cdrom contains
both versions 5.5 and 5.9.0, and each version can be run directly from the
cdrom by one click on a button, either in Xmaxima, or in a command window,
or in an Emacs shell, without interacting with the other version. Adding
the latest version 5.9.1, usable in a command window or in an Emacs shell,
would be easy, I think. As a temporary solution (i.e. waiting for updated
Xmaxima) this might allow, for example, to use Xmaxima 5.9.0 for current
work, and use the latest version 5.9.1 to benefit of corrected bugs,
additional Maxima packages or perform double-checking of results, etc.
Would this be of any help for you?

Best wishes,
