Impressive. Quite a detailed document, although I don't quite
understand why maxima versions prior to 5.9 would be of interest.

Unfortunately, geomview is specific to unix and moreover has not seen a
whole lot of active development. It can be compiled and run thanks to
some bug fixing on Debian and Gentoo, possibly others, but it is not a
terribly active program from a development and maintainance point of
view. I agree the output looks quite nice, but it's not really viable
currently as a default.
Eventually we will probably put together our own solution to the
graphics question, but what form that solution will take is anyone's
guess right now. There are quite a few steps between where we are and
graphics being the main focus of development. :-/
