I like the idea of using % for a prefix.

I agree we should do something. When we discussed this last time, I
thought we should wait until the case-sensitivity issues were worked out
in the next release so that we could use a mixed-case solution. However,
that would violate the "all-lower case" plan for maxima built-in
objects.

I therefore propose that the default inchar and outchar be set to
	%in
and
	%out,
respectively. Since there has been much too much discussion and too
little action on this problem, I am going to go ahead and make this
change as soon as I can get through the the cvs repository, which seems
to be temporarily inaccessible.
