We need to remember too that any advanced user can switch back to C and
D without any trouble. %in and %out are safer for new users, and I
tend to think the safe default is the better default.
Since my experience is also that D lines tend to be used more than C
lines, maybe a callback where %# is %out# and %%# is %in# would be
appropriate? Of course this would discourage the idea of using %, %%,
%%% for previous lines.
