I have checked in the bulk of the code cleanups contributed by Andreas
Eder. The problems I mentioned earlier on the list turned out to be my
fault; his changes all seem to work. Many thanks to Andreas.

I am still looking over the changes to nforma.lisp and trmode.lisp.
