I suggest you read Peter Norvig's
Paradigms of AI Programming, which has some
small, self-contained, but surprisingly powerful
programs for symbolic math written in Lisp.
It might be an adequate substitute for looking
at Maxima source. Or it could perhaps make you
interested in learning more about such techniques
and then you could look at Maxima.
