R renders 2-d plots somewhat more beautifully than Gnuplot,
so I agree there is something to gain by using R directly
or by cutting out the plotting routines and somehow
linking them into Maxima. It's certainly worth a try.
I don't know if R has any support for 3-d plots.
Aside from plotting, R is the best all-around numerical
system that I've encountered. It also has a very active
user and development community -- it wouldn't hurt for
Maxima to be tied in.
