Sorry, I should have weighed in on this earlier - starting new job.
maxima + xmaxima (and presumably other interfaces) run into problems
with firewalls because of their use of sockets to communicate. I
installed it on a computer with Norton's firewall recently and I had to
make several explicit allows before it would work. With ZoneAlarm a
long time back I had to back down the security level a notch or two to
prevent the same thing from happening.
To firewalls, the connection between xmaxima and maxima looks like any
other internet communication, and in more secure modes they block it.
I'm not quite sure what we can do about the problem besides a) warning
people about it, b) finding some way for the installer to test if its a
problem and warn about it automatically, or c) find a communications
channel between two programs on a computer that a firewall won't get
upset about.
