The design of the XMaxima system is an "engine" that runs in the
background and another executable that runs as a "user interface".
These programs talk via a "port" on your computer.
(a port is a virtual address so that programs can find each other.
If you run a webserver, programs will connect to this executable through
port 80, both from other computers and from your own computer.)

So you do not need to disable the whole firewall, just open this port for
local access. (I think the port used by Maxima is 4040 but I do not
remember. Check the logfile of the firewall to see what connection it
blocked.)
