conventions for .texi files

The use of xterm and similar programs is pervasive in unix-like
environments, so I suspect tty displays will be with us for some time.

Showing output as typeset by latex would mean that people using
out-of-the-box installations would not see what's shown
in the manual. It seems best to make the manual match the 
output of the default installation.
