Problem with emaxima in CVS

The problem doesn't occur in CVS emacs, so there was probably a minor
bug somewhere (or perhaps CVS emacs now compensates for bugs in
other elisp files).
I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, but it comes to light when
the tabs are replaced by spaces in the maxima buffer.
Replacing the tabs by spaces is useful when you cut and paste into a
different buffer, so I don't want to stop doing that completely, but
I've disabled it until I figure out what the problem is.
So the current CVS version should format the Maxima output correctly.
