I suggest that you use Nset. It's (1) not obviously broken, (2) better
tested, (3) has better
documentation, and (4) has more functions than any other set package that
is in the Maxima
distribution. Files in /contrib are not necessarily in purgatory---some
of them are better
than similar code found elsewhere.
I also suggest that you get the latest version of Maxima Nset from my
webpage.
Another thing: Stavros Macrakis is the co-author of Maxima Nset. I wrote
many of the higher-level
functions, the user documentation, and the testing code. Much of the rest
is due to Stavros.

I have looked at Barton Willis's contributed nset package instead, but of
course I'd prefer to use packages that are included in the core of Maxima
itself.
