Well, yes, that is the best solution.  I'm not exactly sure how to go
about it.

I don't think so, at least it doesn't seem to for me with the
hypergeometric functions.  Sometimes I ask for the sign of 1-v, but
the interactive query is if v-1 is pos, neg, or zero.
