tex(...) really rewrites f(x)^2 as f^2(x)?
I just checked; it does.
Aside from trig functions, whose notation (in my opinion) is all
messed up anyhow, I've always seen f^2(x) to mean f(f(x)). If that
isn't universal, it is a very common practice, and I think tex(...)
does the wrong thing here.

Nice. The lack of parentheses in sin x, while standard, always
