It depends a little on what you want to do with it. Currently
virtually all Maxima packages that have been written have been added to
the distribution, so there has been no effort put into "external"
installers. Barton has some packages not yet included in Maxima, IIRC,
but no elaborate effort has been made on those because AFAIK they will
probably all migrate in eventually.
Is there a reason you wouldn't want us to include this in Maxima, like
licensing issues? (Maxima is GPL.) We have a share/contrib directory
which is kind of a staging area for new packages where they are
debugged, upgraded, and (occasionally) written/rewritten.
I suppose we should have a general "loadpackage" script for external
packages, but I kind of like the trend to have everything "right there"
in Maxima. Plus, all that code gives new developers a good body of
work to build off of/learn from.
