I find CMUCL and GCL both have :IEEE-FLOATING-POINT in
*FEATURES*, although they both barf on computations which
would yield not-a-number or infinity. Clisp is honest enough
to omit :IEEE-FLOATING-POINT.

Maxima probably should try to work around the underlying Lisp's
prohibition of special values. 

In any event, Maxima's failure to catch the exception
thrown by GCL on floating point overflow is just a bug.
I'll file a bug report about it.
