for my part i'm slightly worried that implementation-dependent i/o
code would make maxima even less comprehensible than it is now.

well, even simpler than reverting the patch is to put (FRESH-LINE)
at the top of DISPLA. so maybe i'll do that to the release branch
and we can continue working on the development branch.
