Hello,
So far as I know, the problem is item 5 below -- Windows
thinks you want to prevent the GUI from talking to Maxima
proper. (The GUI, called Xmaxima, is a separate program
from Maxima. Xmaxima opens a socket to communicate
with Maxima. Windows security thinks Xmaxima might be
spyware / trojan horse / etc.)
Other people have seen the same problem. Unfortunately
I don't know how to disable the blocking. Supposedly there
is a control panel for Windows security somewhere but I
don't know if that works; I haven't tried it.
Lamlbiro -- the command line part should still work.
About the GUI blocking problem, you might have to ask
someone who knows about Windows specifically.
To everyone else -- I wonder how we can prevent the
"block this program?" question from ever appearing.
best,
Robert Dodier

Thanks for the reply.
I am supplying more details so that it might shed light on the problem.
1 I am using windows XP SP2 withh all pathes applied
2 i download the 5.9.2.exe from sourceforge
3.ran the exe (ie windows installer)
4. started up maxima
5. up came the block prompt (-- and I foolishly, by accident, said BLOCK too
quick with the mouse!!!)
6. maxima throws up th Gui screen both parts
7. eventually times out
8. restart dows not help.
9 I then uninstalled (ALWAYS using supplied uninstall exe)and went thru the
cyle, except did not get the unblock prompt.
10. in desparation I unistalled, and got 5.9.1,
11. went through install, and said UNBLOCK
12 it did not work
13 unistalled everything
14 installed 5.9.0
15 worked like a charm
16 unistalled 5.9.0
17 cleared out some registry entries.
18 installed 5.9.1 and UNBLOCKED and it worked
19. uninstalled
20 installed 5.9.2
21 no UNBLOCK message, times out.
22 unistalled
23 (as I had installed wxMaxima) I had to remove (after unistall) some
registry entries
24 check all directiories for anything spurious
General points
a. the xmaxima script refers to "WINDOWS NT" should this be
"WINDOWS_NT"? or XP?
b. running from the Command prompt xmaima trggers maxima.bat with only
one parameter "4008"
c. when it the GUI window comes up the bottom windows has a successfully
load 'Maxima Primer"
d. typing in a command from the samples I get
can't read "_WinInfo.maxima.text(atMaximaPrompt)": no such element in array
can't read "_WinInfo.maxima.text(atMaximaPrompt)": no such element in array
while executing
"set _WinInfo[set win]($var)"
(procedure "oget" line 4)
invoked from within
"oget $w atMaximaPrompt"
(procedure "CMeval" line 24)
invoked from within
"CMeval .maxima.text "
(command bound to event)
