I agree, but I'm not sure if there's a way around it really.

That might be simpler for debugging purposes. The
current choices were made after a number of bug reports
having to do with people wanting to use C1, D1, etc.
in expressions as variables, and Maxima treated them
as the variables containing the line expressions which
resulted in unexpected behavior. %i1 and %o1 don't tend
to get used as much, and are still clear as to their
meaning.
