binary in .tar.gz instead of rpm?

if you want to install the files in the rpm under your home directory
(for example), i believe you can specify an option to the rpm command
to tell it to do so. i believe you want "--relocate" and "--badreloc".

failing that, it is possible to unpack the rpm file -- see rpm2cpio and cpio.
then you can copy the files to whatever directory you want them in.
