zoltan,
the binary rpms were created on a FC1 system.
it is possible, but unlikely, that they'll work correctly on FC4.
my advice is to recompile maxima on your box.
to do that you need a lisp implementation.
i'll recommend clisp (http://clisp.cons.org), because it is less strange
than other implementations, although it is noticeably slower.
after installing clisp (or whatever-lisp) and downloading the maxima src.rpm,
it should be possible to use rpmbuild to build binary rpms for your system.
if you are interested, you can upload them to the SF ftp site and i'll
put them in
the file manager; that would be very helpful.
looking at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Extras , it appears that
rex dieter (rexdieter[at]users.sf.net) is the maintainer of some
maxima packages for FC. you might try to coordinate with him.
hope this helps, and if you build or locate 5.9.3 rpms for FC4,
i would be very interested to hear about it.
feel free to write again if you run into some problem.
