Thank you everyone for the reply. In particular, Herb Martin's response
and link-fest should keep me going for several months.
I LOVE the Firefox/Scrapbook extension! I snaffled all the links into
Scrapbook to read at leisure.
Raffaele, I grabbed the Macsyma package to have a look at. I'd love to
program this into maxima, but unfortunately I come from a Python
background rather than Lisp.
David, I'll look at the maxima code, though I was kind of hoping that
Lie analysis could step beyond first order ODE's. This entire episode
was inspired by trying to use maxima to solve a complex set of
differential equations - and finding out that the set was too complex
for maxima. The set of equations is forgotten now, but the interest in
learning new methods still lingers.

PS: Does anyone know how I can set up thunderbird to automatically
address replies to the maxima mail list, rather than attempting to send
through the gmane newsgroup? I can change it once the compose window
pops up, but it'd be nice for it to be automatic.
