You've heard the answer as far as XMaxima is concerned. For an
alternative interactive "worksheet" mode for Maxima, you could try the
wxMaxima or (my personal favourite) the TeXmacs interface.
TeXmacs is available for non-free operating systems. Its interface is
very reminiscent, I think, of a Maple worksheet, down to using very
similar fonts and colours for the Maxima interface. I imagine it must
also be possible to insert a Maxima session in TeXmacs from other
operating systems.
It seems that in the TeXmacs interface that "enter" by default puts a
semicolon at the end of the line and that to split an input line into
several lines, you need to press shift+enter. This behaviour is also
very reminiscent of the classic Maple worksheet interface. It really
makes me wonder whom was inspired by who. ;-)
As an added benefit of TeXmacs, that perhaps is not important to you,
you also get Emacs-like keybindings for controlling the cursor and
wiping and yanking text (a.k.a. copy/paste), plus (and this is a big
plus) beautifully-rendered REAL TeX output!
Alright, enough advertising. Just another option.
