This is worse than very confusing. It is a bug. Since xmaxima
doesn't support editing previous lines, it shouldn't act as though it
is editing previous lines.
Until xmaxima can be fixed to support multiline editing properly, it
should at least simply refuse to erase things from previous lines,
beeping or whatever instead of moving the cursor back.
