I think that .mac and .max should both be acceptable, or for that matter,
.txt or <nothing>.
just as some of us have gotten used to lisp programs in files that end in
.lisp .lsp .cl [common lisp]... . :)
[I do not know of any legacy code that would be hurt by allowing .max, also]
