I agree with Robert entirely. Extension .mac was chosen as
default extension for Maxima files somewhere in 2002. I don't
remember dates precisely but anyone can find corresponding
discussion in this list archives. Whether this convention
is good or not it is another matter but multiple extension
for one object is bad and should be avoided. We have either
keep .mac extension as official or change this convention
at once provided there is really strong motivation for doing
this.
