can maxima do: solve(sin(x)+cos(x)=0,x);

Well, Maple's answer is incomplete. Look at the plots of sin(x) and
-cos(x) and see where they meet.
The commercial macsyma gives

[x = ((8 * %pi * %n2 - %pi)/4), x = ((8 * %pi * %n1 + 3 * %pi)/4)]

what would YOU like to see?

Many equations cannot be solved in closed form in terms of known
functions, so the default in Maxima is to return the original
formula, or perhaps a reduced form of it.
