Same problems...
(1) Unfortunately the on line mailing list which
can be easily reached from the maxima home page
is still stuck on the 1st of October:
http://www.math.utexas.edu/pipermail/maxima/2006/date.html
It would have been enough the change the link
to the on line forum.
Could some one please fix at least the link?

The situation on the "Ubuntu front"
is equally bad:
in the Ubuntu repository
maxima is outdated and xmaxima is totaly broken.
I don't know how to create a .deb package
but I managed to compile it and
I can say that the latest maxima and xmaxima
work fine after compilation.
The common user will have a very bad
experience with maxima and xmaxima
if she/he tries to get them via apt
or authomatic update.
Ubuntu is a popular distribution and
it is a pitty to have no reasonable maxima for it.
I have reported this as a bug in
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bugs
but so far it hasn't helped.
