I'm pretty much in agreement with your comments about src vs share.

Well, I don't know if the code should be moved, but how about
if we rework the representation to be like other Maxima objects?
At present continued fraction objects are expressions of the
form ((MLIST CF) ...) and they are displayed as lists.
How about if we represent them as ((%CF) ...) and display them
as either cf(...) or, if someone has the time to write some display
code, using one of the conventional notations. Maxima list
notation is surprising and misleading.
