That sounds like a bug which has been fixed in cvs (since the 5.10
release). So try the latest maxima.el from cvs, or email me offlist
and I'll email you a copy.

I think the problem was that maxima mode wasn't fully evaluated. With
the fixed maxima.el, you should get completion with META-TAB.
Let me know if this doesn't work.
