Well, TeX is even worse, isn't it?  Can you cut and paste from it?
With HTML, you can easily have formulae link to their machine-readable
form (though as far as I know, not cut-and-paste directly from the
HTML document).

Well, this is not a format issue, but a content issue.  Perhaps we
(including me) should spend more time working on documentation ....
