A couple of ideas. (1) linel : 50 (say) makes the output narrower.
(2) The Maxima ascii art pretty-printer outputs tab characters
(and assumes the tab stops are 8 characters apart).
You might try substituting spaces for tabs in the copied text.
Maybe that will preserve alignment better. (3) texmacs makes
really nice looking output (although in my experience it crashes
every now and then).
